The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office is often the first responder on the scene of any reported incident. As such, the Sheriff's Office frequently meets people in the throes of mental illness who need treatment instead of incarceration. The Sheriff's Office will have a prominent presence on the Safe Haven Campus.
The St. Tammany Parish Public School System provides a caring environment for learning, a challenging and relevant curriculum, innovative instruction and solid student achievement. The Mental Health Services division of the St. Tammany Parish Coroner provides an invaluable service to the citizens of this parish. Under state law, the coroner has the legal authority to commit anyone who is homicidal, suicidal, or gravely disabled. Our office stands ready, willing and able to exercise this authority to ensure that our community remains safe and to ensure that those citizens suffering from mental illness are appropriately treated.
Statistics show that many criminal defendants have underlying mental health issues. With decreased public access to mental health evaluation and care, Behavioral Health Court was established by Judge Peter J. Garcia to offer a safety net in the criminal justice system for persons who would benefit from access to such care. Case Managers, counselors and treatment are meshed with adjudication by the Court to return individuals to healthier environments and access to care. www.22ndjdc.com
Along with traditional clinic services, such as evaluation, therapy, and medication management, a number of various other services are provided through contract providers, such as respite care, case management, crisis intervention, in-home therapy, vocational training, housing supports, etc. In addition to community-based out-patient services, FPHSA has two inpatient substance abuse treatment programs, Fontainebleau Treatment Center (FTC) and the Alcohol Drug Unit (ADU). FPHSA serves both adults and children who meet the treatment criteria for services in the areas of addictive disorders, developmental disabilities, and/or mental health.
