U.S. Senator John Kennedy Visits Safe Haven Campus with Members of the Safe Haven Foundation

Pat Brister, St. Tammany Parish President, joined U.S. Senator John Kennedy, and Louisiana State Senator Jack Donahue, for a presentation while visiting the Safe Haven campus in the Mandeville area. The visit was organized by Donahue, who is also the chairman of the newly formed Safe Haven Foundation — established to act as a support arm of the Safe Haven Project and to augment the funding of certain aspects of the project through volunteerism, fundraising and raising public awareness.

“This project is the result of leadership,” said U.S. Senator John Kennedy. “The leaders in St. Tammany took a problem —the closure of Southeast Hospital — and turned it into a long-term solution with the Safe Haven initiative.”

Louisiana State Senator Jack Donahue lauded the visit as an opportunity for Senator Kennedy to get an up-close look at the progress underway at the campus, and the work that is still needed.  “Safe Haven is making a difference on the North Shore and surrounding areas.  Senator Kennedy is coming to visit the facilities and to get an update on the great work that is being done.  His continuing interest in Safe Haven is another key to its success.”

“Even though Safe Haven is still in its early stages, we continue to work on bringing the entire campus to life,” Said Pat Brister, St. Tammany Parish President. “It is absolutely essential that we make people aware of what is already available at the facilities out here — the NAMI St. Tammany Day Center, Fontainebleau Treatment Center and Northlake Behavioral Health, to name a few. We still have much to accomplish at Safe Haven, and support from the top down is critical to achieving success with this model, and ultimately helping people with behavioral health needs.”

Initiatives underway include: The NAMI St. Tammany Day Center, now open and providing transportation; in the first quarter of 2019, ground is expected to be broken on the Crisis Receiving Center— considered the anchor of the Safe Haven facility model; work is expected to begin in 2019 on the green infrastructure project grant-funded by the LA Safe initiative; and the Family Promise Day Center — the signature project of the Safe Haven Foundation.

NAMI St. Tammany Day Center Now Offering Transportation

The NAMI St. Tammany Day Center, the first of many additions to the Safe Haven Campus, now has transportation available to and from the center— at no cost — to St. Tammany residents.

“This is an option we are happy to have now, because it means people who need to be here, now have a way to come here,” said Tom Rowan, Program Director. “It is as simple as a phone call to our dispatcher the day before you’d like to come. They will schedule your ride, pick you up, and bring your home afterward. It is a win for people in need and a win for us, because we get to share these valuable support services.” 

The busses run from early morning through 3:30 p.m. in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. The dispatcher takes calls until 4 p.m. Monday – Friday (except on holidays). Residents should call 985-626-6518 to schedule rides and allow 24-hour notice for scheduling.

The NAMI St. Tammany Day Center program is staffed by Certified Peer Support Specialists who will assist adults living with severe and persistent behavioral health disorders in St. Tammany Parish, in navigating access to appropriate support resources and providing alternatives for less costly behavioral health care in a less restrictive environment, leading to recovery. There is no cost to attend the program. The transportation services are partially funded by a grant.

$5.3 Million Grant Award Announced

Pat Brister, St. Tammany Parish President, announced that St. Tammany Parish Government, and the Safe Haven project,  will receive $5,310,000 in grant funding through the National Disaster Resiliency funding, facilitated through the State of Louisiana’s LA SAFE initiative. The funding from this competitive grant will be to implement the Safe Haven green infrastructure projects. As part of the grant process, LA SAFE held individual engagement events in 2017 to gather public input on six proposed projects in St. Tammany Parish, as well as other proposed projects throughout the State. The Safe Haven project was supported by the residents in public meetings, and voted for by St. Tammany Parish citizens as one component of the competitive process.

“The Safe Haven behavioral health campus will have multi-layered benefits. The green infrastructure, water quality and stormwater management projects will enhance critical drainage and flood mitigation. To have Safe Haven recognized by a State and Federal program, and especially by our own citizens, is extremely gratifying for us,” said Pat Brister, St. Tammany Parish President. “I again want to thank the residents of St. Tammany for participating in this process, because it is through your input, and your recognition of its value to our community, that we will see these dollars spent on Safe Haven.”

The Safe Haven Blue Green Campus project, located in the Mandeville area adjacent to Cane Bayou, is a community nonstructural Mitigation/Flood Risk Reduction and Public Services project that divert stormwater into existing forested land, illustrating how a multi-phase development with existing infrastructure in vulnerable environments can be repurposed to benefit surrounding areas.  You can view the Safe Haven resilience project here.

The first physical component of the Safe Haven Campus, the NAMI St. Tammany Day Center was opened to the public in June 2018. Construction on the planned Crisis Receiving Center could begin by early 2019.
